Ear Candy In The City: Two Door Cinema Club – Beacon

Earlier this year, during a long conversation about music with a good friend he brings up Irish import Two Door Cinema Club as one of his “indie rock-ish” favorites and at the time I had only really listened to one track they preformed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon “What You Know” which I immediately downloaded but being it was sort of late there wasn’t much time to research them. The track stayed in my new finds playlist that month and some time later made its way to other playlist. Since there wasn’t anything else by them in my library I figured it was just some random track I liked and nothing else. After hearing about them again, I looked them up and was hooked on their 2010 freshman album “Tourist History” (maybe I’ll write about this album later).

The Two Door Cinema Club’s sophomore album “Beacon” dropped this week and it has definitely solidified my love for them. Click here to listen to the whole album. The guitar band trio returns with a sleekly-sophisticated and energetically-upbeat album that still holds some of the melancholic love lyrics familiar to their fans. Perhaps that’s why this amazing album has not stopped blasting through my speakers/headphones all week.

No track exemplifies this more than the first single “Sleep Alone” introduced last month on their website and YouTube. Hauntings by ghosts-of-failed-lovers-past is the topic lead vocalist Alex Trimble sings of… “He sleeps alone; He needs no army where he's headed; 'Cause he knows; That they're just ghosts; And they can't hurt him if he can't see them, oh; And I don't know if in the morning I will be here; And if so; Let it be known; That I was worthy, I was worthy, I was worthy, I was.” It is undoubtedly to become a gay boy’s summertime breakup anthem with the androgynous lyrics especially when preformed by a male signer.

The danceable “Someday” is a pessimistic beginning love song that boldly asks “Where do we start; If we will end apart?; Where do we go from here?; It's head versus heart; It will all be clear; Someday.”

“Settle”, “Sun” and “Next Year” are refreshing takes on the expected sophomore-album-angst that comes from being on the road touring for the first album – and that of long-distance relationships. “The World Is Watching (with Valentina)” best expresses this distant yearning declaring, “I wont forget the things you said; That's dancing and singing inside my head; You've always known you're not alone; I want you with me.” And it is “Spring” that gives validation to short periods spent together stating,“If I follow you then; I will need you closer; One more day is not enough; I don't mind; If all this time; Is all that we had to spend; Everyone carelessly pretend.”

The Beacon (Deluxe Version) includes 14 additional tracks recorded “Live at Brixton Academy” on 25 February 2012 (according to the bands wiki page) making it a great introduction piece to the bands body of work. This is definitely one album that will have multiple tracks moving on to my “Best of Alternative” playlist.

Ear Candy In The City: Lady Gaga “Born This Way” Video Premiere (Part 1)

After the hot-cold reception of Lady Gaga’s new single “Born This Way” by nearly everyone older than 20 years old because they remember Madonna’s “Express Yourself” and the similarities of the two tracks. Then there is the controversy Lady Gaga caused by claiming it’s a “Gay (Rights) Anthem” before it was even released. Obviously the song was written with her queer fans in mind; with such lyrics as, “don't be a drag, just be a queen” and “no matter gay, straight or bi, lesbian, transgender life, I'm on the right track baby, I was born to survive,” it is bound to be playing at every PRIDE event around world.

Now more controversy to come with today’s premiere of the 1st video for “Born This Way”; and the 2nd coming out soon will be a more “stripped-down version of the song” according to Lady Gaga herself, with the proceeds going to an anti-bullying charity. As much as I occasionally feel a little anti-gaga on occasions she always seems to bring me around when she does things like this. It’s hard not to like someone who fights for your cause.

So what’s my take on the new 7 minute video written by Lady Gaga, directed by fashion photographer Nick Knight, and choreographed by Laurie Ann Gibson? It's a smörgåsbord with a bit of everything all mixed into it. First all the references to pop icons, both alive and dead tossed in – like Alexander McQueen (his final fashion collection), Michael Jackson (white gloves), Rick Genest (aka Zombie Boy and her as Zombie Girl with pink hair… P!NK?!? ...hum? Could that be yet another reference… nah.) and Madonna (with tooth gap included and multiple similarities to past dance moves/videos). Even recognizable film scenes were thrown into this mix from the opening that feels a little like “Labyrinth” with the unicorn (or is it about Charlie?) and graphics which smoothly transitions into the first “Superman” movie with the clear cube arrival of the “Mother Monster” in this short film about rebirths in the “multiverse” and then from “Sin City” you have the awesome black and white shooting scene and even some scenes from the great 1927's expressionist German film “Metropolis” were featured (if you haven’t seen the movie rent it).

Aside from Rick Genest, there is plenty representation of various body modifications and body alterations throughout the video, including her wearing the prosthetics she has been wearing on her face and shoulders lately to all her public appearances.

One of my favorite parts is when she makes gesters of jerking off the tosses it to the side which could be a little self-reference to the rumors she’s a hermaphrodite but with a little Madonna-esque “Fuck You!” mixed into it. LOVE IT!

Okay enough telling you about it just “put your paws up” and watch it!

Here are some cool shots from the video:

Here are some more images of Rick Genest for your enjoyment:

Really he wasn't "Born This Way" so what did Rick Genest look like before the tattoos?

Ear Candy In The City: Garçon Garçon

Today my attention goes to the Land Down Under. No it’s not about the Australia Open that was last week. I’m tracking the chatter of music news Australia is causing in the blogesphere and it’s not being produced by Kylie Minogue.
Garçon Garçon is a pair of Hot Bears hailing from The Red Light Capital of Australia –Sydney's Kings Cross. This unsigned blog-sensation is composed of Nathan Mahon (vocals/guitar) and Nick Tsirimokos (synth/programming). The Beary Hot Aussie duo has definitely earned the coverage they have been receiving from sources like DNA Magazine but there is still not much information out on them. Their Facebook Biography states:
Combining new wave synths with a unique '80s feel and a dash of blatant pop, Garçon Garçon write intelligent songs with catchy hooks. Coming from different musical worlds of classical and punk rock, the duo conjure a sound as complex as it is podium busting.

The pair recently made a splash in the fashion industry, with Australian icon Peter Morrissey using GG's unreleased track, 'Do it right', to launch his acclaimed new collection during Sydney Fashion Week, gaining them international coverage.

Garçon Garçon are currently at Studio 301 recording their debut EP, due out 2011. They say it will "showcase both sweaty club anthems and sleazy electro pop treats - LA, Hollywood, hot summer nights, convertibles, the sunset strip".

To support this release, the boys have scheduled their first overseas dates for early 2011 across North American and Europe. Catch them before the world does.

Here is a taste from the official online premiere of Garçon Garçon's debut single "Stay In Touch"

In The City Lyrics: Amanda Palmer & The Young Punx – Map Of Tasmania Lyrics

After sharing with you Amanda Palmer’s GREAT video for “Map Of Tasmania” from her new album “Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under” out now. I got to thinking; sometime these great songs don’t have lyrics posted anywhere and why not share the lyrics, maybe a visual aid to help the lyrics make more sense. That’s how this new entry section “In The City Lyrics” is born.

WOW! Map Of Tasmania, makes more sense?
NOTE: The lyrics below are the copyright of the artist and only presented here for reference purposes.

Amanda Palmer & The Young Punx – Map Of Tasmania

Oh My God, Fuck It!
They don’t play the song on the radio
Oh My God, Fuck It!
They don’t play the song on the radio
Oh My God, Fuck It!

They don’t play the song on the radio
They don’t show the tits in the video
They don’t know that we are the media
They don’t know that we start the mania
I don’t want to see but I’m making you
Ass is off it’s seat and I’m shaking you
Walking down the street I’m the lady - ja
Showing off my map of Tasmania

Oh My God, Fuck It!
Oh My God, Fuck It!

Soft and sweet and shape like a triangle!
Some girls want no shape and they shave it all
That’s so whack it hurts with the stubble
Walking around look like an eight year old!
Soft and sweet and shape like a triangle!
Some girls want no shape and they shave it all
That’s so whack it hurts with the stubble
Walking around look like an eight year old!

I say grow that shit like a jungle
Give ‘em something strong to hold onto
Let it fly in the open wind
If it get too bushy you can trim

They don’t play the song on the radio
They don’t show the tits in the video
They don’t know that we are the media
They don’t know that we start the mania
I don’t want to see but I’m making you
Ass is off it’s seat and I’m shaking you
Walking down the street I’m the lady -oh
Showing off my map of Tasmania!!!

They don’t play the song on the radio
